The University of South Florida softball team (5-2) welcomes Penn State (1-4), St. John’s (1-3-1), and Loyola Chicago (1-4) to Tampa for the second annual Fonseca Memorial Tournament at USF this Friday through Sunday.
South Florida will start the weekend with a doubleheader on Friday against Penn State at 2 p.m., followed by a 4:30 p.m. game against Loyola Chicago. On Saturday, the Bulls will face St. John’s at 11:30 a.m. before being reseeded for the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. South Florida will play one of the three teams on Sunday at noon.
The Bulls are coming off a doubleheader sweep over the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles on Wednesday. The Bulls were led by Alex Wilkes, who matched a program-high seven RBI in game one. The last time a South Florida player had seven RBI in a game was on April 16, 2011, when Stephanie Medina had seven against Seton Hall. Wilkes accompanied her seven RBI with four hits and a three-run home run.
In game two, Belle Sardja pitched six innings while only allowing a single hit. She earned her second victory of the season, while Payton Dixon earned her third in game one.
Grace Chin earned her first career hit in the second game, while Sam Walz recorded her first two RBI of her career.
Josie Foreman continues to lead the team with a .636 batting average. In 11 plate appearances, she has seven hits, one double, four RBI, and two runs.
Weekend Information
This weekend’s tournament will be a round-robin tournament. Every team will play each other once and then be seeded into a tournament bracket-style. The semifinals will be on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., while the finals will be on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and 12 p.m.
No matter the seeding, South Florida will play at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
