Tim Montana chatted about his new music, which includes his song “Devil You Know,” and his new film.
‘Devil You Know’
On his new single “Devil You Know,” he remarked, “I always love shooting music videos in my hometown, so we went back to Butte, MT. We found an old church and, without knowing in advance, it turned out to be the Baptist Church my mother was baptized in.
“I wanted to find a way to share the visuals still in my head from my childhood having an abusive step parent. It wasn’t easy, we all cried a bit, including the director, but it turned out being a really positive experience and very therapeutic for me,” he said.
“My 12-year-old son actually played ‘me’ as a child in the video, so that was an added bonus,” he said.
Music and songwriting inspirations
On his music and songwriting inspirations, he said, “I’m definitely inspired by life experiences both good and bad. If I’m spending time in the mountains, I’ll tend to write about mountains and nature but I’ll also write a lot about my childhood.”
“I find a lot of my songs by humming melodies when I’m alone in the woods. Music
has always been a very nurturing thing for me for as long as I can remember and I’m grateful to do it for a living,” he added.
The digital age
On being a singer-songwriter in the digital age, he said, “It’s exciting to have the world right there at your fingertips but I also feel like it can be taxing on artists’ creativity and our art as a whole is suffering from it.”
“I often look at my daughter who plays music but also grew up in the iPhone era and she definitely struggles to find time to practice music as there’s always distractions on her phone,” he said.
“I’m fortunate I didn’t have that as a kid or I probably wouldn’t have put the proper time into music. As for streaming, I’m a fan. I can listen to any song at any time and vice versa with fans finding and sharing my music,” he added.
Future plans
Regarding his future plans, he shared, “I plan on making a new record and announcing a bunch of shows in 2024! I also just bought an 1896 cowboy bar and lodge in Montana with my right hand man Billy F Gibbons (of ZZ Top) and a few of our dear friends. It’s keeping us busy and we’re having a blast being back in big sky country. Check it out if you’re ever in MT – the Wise River Club.”
New movie with Samuel L. Jackson and Pierce Brosnan
“I’m finishing the movie ‘Unholy Trinity’ in Montana, as we speak,” he said. “I have a scene with Samuel L Jackson. I filmed and that was the honor of a lifetime! I started dabbling in acting over Covid and this will be my third western film.”
“I learn a lot and have a lot of fun on these project,” he said. “I’m a big fan of artists who act and actors who play music because, after all, we’re entertainers. Keep your eyes peeled for ‘Unholy Trinity’ in 2024!”
Success
On his definition of the word success, he said, “Success is making a living doing what you love and I truly love making music. I don’t care if it’s two people or 20,000, to have folks that’ll take time out of their life to listen to what I say on a mic, that is success.”
Closing thoughts on ‘Devil You Know’
Montana stated about “Devil You Know,” “I hope my song relates to people who have gone through anything tough. Anybody who has suffered through break ups, to addiction, to abuse, to PTSD.”
“I’ve had my share of struggles and hope to inspire folks to keep climbing no matter how low you feel,” he added.
