Country singer-songwriter Brooke Eden (and “American Idol” alumna) chatted about her new EP “Outlaw Love.”
On Friday, June 9, BBR Music Group/ BMG vocal powerhouse Brooke Eden released her new EP, Outlaw Love. “The new music is going so well,” she admitted. “I am so happy about everything.”
‘Outlaw Love’ EP
Eden co-wrote each of the four songs on the EP, which is her most confident and commanding effort yet. Her free spirit and unapologetic attitude shines through on the title track “Outlaw Love,” which claps back at anyone who thinks they have the right to tell you who to love, advising to “leave the judging to Jesus.”
“The new single ‘Outlaw Love’ came about because there is so much anti-LGBTQ legislation that is happening,” she said.
“There is so much love in the LGBTQ community, and I felt it was time for me to stand up and speak out that this isn’t right and just talk about it and be an open platform for people to communicate about things . This is a community that is just trying to love each other,” she elaborated.
“I’ve had people tell me that I’m this new type of ‘outlaw,’ so I thought it was time to get real and talk about real things,” she added.
“This song is about standing up for who you are, and what you believe in,” she said. “Also, not being afraid to stand up for yourself and your community. I’ve been called an outlaw for it before, and I am realizing that’s okay and I own it.”
“Chills” channels Brooke’s R&B-Pop influences, the vibey, romantic song describes how someone can make you feel butterflies, no matter the situation. From the twangy beat and rhythmic flow on “Whispering” to the harmonious and evocative “All My Life,” Brooke continues her reign of being a torchbearer for inclusion in country music.
Brooke has been named a “Next Big Thing” by MusicRow magazine, one of Nashville Lifestyles’ “Most Beautiful People,” been lauded by Billboard, Rolling Stone, Vogue, American Songwriter, MTV News, Buzzfeed, People and Yahoo and is a CMT Music Award and GLAAD Award nominee.
2023 GLAAD nomination
On earning her GLAAD nomination for “Outstanding Breakthrough Music Artist,” she said, “It felt amazing, especially to be a country artist and get recognized by GLAAD. It means that things are moving forward in a really positive direction. It felt amazing to be on the red carpet with other queer icons that I look up to so much, and to be there with allies such as Maren Morris.”
The digital age
On being an artist in the digital age, Eden said, “It is cool that you don’t have to be played on country radio in order for people to hear your music. I think it’s interesting. I pushed back on TikTok for so long, but now that I am on there, I love it so much. TikTok has such a good algorithm and they have pushed me to the fan-base that gets me.”
“I am really thankful for TikTok and the streaming platforms that allow artists to put out music and fans to find that and absorb it,” she added.
Dream duet choices in music
She listed Brothers Osborne, Chris Stapleton, as well as Orville Peck, Chely Wright, LeAnn Rimes, The Chicks, as her dream collaboration choices in music.
On the title of the current chapter of her life, Eden said, “Outlaw Love.” “I write my music based on what is going on in my life,” she admitted.
Eden shared that her superpowers of choice would be invisibility and teleportation.
Success
Regarding her definition of success, Eden said, “Getting to be who you are, and being accepted and loved for that. Also, being able to be successful with that as well. Creating a space for people to truly be themselves, and that is important for me. I want to open up country music to everybody.”
