American heavy metal band Five Finger Death Punch or abbreviated 5FDP or FFDP consists of Ivan Moody-lead singer, Zoltan Bathory-Bass, Jason Hook-lead guitar, Chris Kael-Bass and Jeremy Spencer-drummer. We had the chance to sit down and talk with Jeremy Spencer about their new album “And Justice for None” and their tour plans for the rest of the year.
We asked Jeremy how was the proccess for their new album and he said, “It was actually a pretty long process. We were trying to fit in recording whenever we weren’t touring, like we always do. Then we kind of got in a legal tangle with our record label which delayed the release of it. So we had to get that resolved and it took a long time, but it basically bumped us off schedule about a year. So it’s finally coming out and we’re excited to finally let everyone hear it. I mean we’ve lived with these songs for a while now, it’s almost like we’re ready for something new. But the fans haven’t heard it. I think it’s a strong record, I’m happy with the way it turned out. It was tough making it because of what we were dealing with behind the scenes. But I think we came through pretty good and I’m excited to finally get it out there.”
Jeremy tells us the process of the actual production and writing of the songs is that, “It usually starts with one guy that will have like a rough idea and we’ll kind of get together and work on it. Then Ivan’s always the last to do his thing, he’ll do the lyrics last. So there will be a music bit that comes together first and it will start from Jason and myself working or Zoltan coming up with something and, it’s usually how it has worked, then Ivan’s always the last guy to solve the puzzle really. He has kind of the hardest job, I think, because he has to tell stories. But I think he did a good job, he’s always basically telling you what he feels, like it or not. If he’s pissed off, you’re going to know about it. So that’s kind of how he operates.”
One of the new songs on the album is “Sham Pain” and the video was released earlier this year. Jeremy says, “It was fun making that video, we just tried to make it as corny as we could because making videos, we always have serious videos. But this time, we just felt like, “Let’s just have some fun.” And the lyrics to that song are kind of tongue and cheek anyway, so we just decided to make it over the top and goofy!”
Jeremy says,”There’s a variety of different styles of songs, I mean you’re not going to get something that’s drastically different, we kind of sound like what we sound like, this is our seventh record. But we did do a cover of Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s “Blue on Black,” which is a different kind of thing for us. But i think it turned out cool, there’s definitely some ballads with Piano and there’s some pretty extreme heavy stuff on there too. I don’t think it’s going to shock anyone with how different it sounds, there’s no Oboes and classical things like that or whatever on there. But I think it’s pretty cool. ‘Fake’ is my favorite song on the new album, because it’s aggressive and up tempo, it’s fun to play. I also like the ballad on there called, ‘I Refuse.’ I think that’s really good too. It’s kind of the opposite ends of the spectrum, but I like them both.” Some of the things that Jeremy likes most about touring he says,”It’s getting bigger and bigger; like we get to have more production, there’s bigger crowds, we’re playing longer, so it’s cool to watch that happen coming from the beginning stages up until now, because that’s always been the dream. There’s a lot of great things about touring, you get to meet a lot of cool people, see a lot of old friends, see places and things that you’ve never seen before, and then it’s time to go home and recharge, because that wears you out after a while and you need to go do that. But it’s cool, I mean we’ve been doing this for 12-13 years.”
We asked Jeremy what does he consider as being his biggest musical accomplishment to date and he stated, “Just the fact that we’re still getting to do this over a decade later. But really, the first time we went gold, when our first record went gold, to me, that was a big accomplishment because that was always a huge dream. Actually, the first two records were certified gold on the same day, which was very cool. That’s a rare thing these days when people don’t buy records, so I’m proud of that.”
For some shows, Jeremy will dress up in a skeleton outfit and makeup, we asked him why he does that and he responded, “I think it spices things up visually, I mean the more things you get people to look at and take away from the experience, I think is a positive. And I’m a huge fan of Kiss, so that was kind of an influence. They were my first band growing up and so anytime I can put on makeup and do anything close to that, then it’s fun.”
One thing that many people may not know about Jeremy is that, “I’m more of a fan of pop music than anything. Like for instance, my favorite artists of all time is Prince and David Bowie. But for drumming, heavy metal’s a lot of fun because you get to basically do a drum solo in every song, you get to keep busy, it’s fun!”
